The attack on Jos Custodial Centre reveals that the gunmen were trapped inside the Centre, which lasted for about 7 hours of Sunday evening. It is, however, surprising that despite this long duration of assault on the facility, no arrest was made.
The invaders were said to have arrived at the Custodial Center at about 5 pm. Despite the engagement of the armed squad personnel and men from sister security services to help in the gun battle, the invaders escaped and freed most of the inmates.
One Jos Custodial Center official was killed in his attempt to stop the invaders, while 7 inmates were reportedly killed as the unknown gunmen attacked Custodial Center (formerly the Nigeria Prisons Jos).
The gunmen, who stormed the facility in large numbers with sophisticated weapons, attacked the gates of the facility, while attempting to free some prisoners.
Speaking to newsmen on the incident, the Controller of the Jos Correctional Center, Samuel Aguda, disclosed that, one NCC officer was killed and another shot in the arm when the invaders arrived at the Custodial Center at about 1720hrs on Sunday, and immediately made for the main gate where they engaged the armed squad personnel in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.
He said, the attackers gained entrance, destroyed the front office holding the records of the JCC and set it alight; they also attacked the store and arms unit of the Centre.
