‘Unknown’ Gunmen attack Jos Security Custodial Centre

PLATEAU STATE – Barely two-to-three days after the attacks on Ta’agbe Village of Miango District, in Bassa local government area and Durbi Village of Share District in Jos East local government on Sunday, the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Jos, Plateau State, came under attack by gunmen, who reportedly stormed the facility in large numbers with sophisticated weapons.

The invaders were said to have arrived at the Custodial Center at about 17:20hrs and immediately made for the main gate where they engaged the armed squad personnel in a gun battle before breaking into the yard.

Although, they gained entrance to the yard, they were however trapped within as men from sister security services were immediately mobilized to assist the armed guards to cordon the perimeter wall and the entire area.

A statement was signed and issued to newsmen to this effect in Jos by Controller of Corrections (PRO), Francis Enobore, who said, reinforcement from the Response Squad of the Service has also been mobilized to the center.

According to him, the situation is presently under control, as the attackers’ firing power is being subdued by superior fire from a combined team of security agencies, adding that, update will be made available as event unfolds.

Meanwhile, the Plateau State Police Command has confirmed the attack on the Jos Prison, which took place on 28/11/2021 at about 17:20hrs, saying, “The Medium-Security Custodial Centre in Jos came under attack by yet to be identified gunmen where some inmates escaped.”

The Commissioner of Police of the Plateau State Police Command, Bartholomew N. Onyeka, said, upon receipt of the report, he led the reinforcement to the scene, and directed that the entire centre be cordoned off.

He also directed for an immediate stop-and-search where seven (7) escapees have been re-arrested by the Police and are in custody, while one escapee voluntarily surrendered himself to the Police. 

He noted that, based on the prompt response, the situation was brought under control by the superior gunfire of Security Agencies. The CP reaffirmed that the Police and other Security Agencies are currently on the ground to effectively deprive the hoodlums of the space they desire to perpetrate their evil acts.
