by Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Kaduna State Government has handed down a 21-day demolition notice to Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Kaduna State Council.

The demolition notice, dated 23rd September, 2021, was issued and signed by Ismail Umaru Dikko on behalf of the Director Kaduna State Urban Planning Development Authority (KASUPDA).

KASUPDA, in the notice of demolition pasted at the entrance of the Union, stated that the NUJ has no planning building permit for the office/shopping complex and also refused to comply with its directive to stop on-street-parking of cars in it frontage of the premises.

The authority threatened that failure to comply with the notice to vacate before expiration date would leave it with no option than to demolish the illegal structures at the expense of the Union in line with the provisions of Sections 60 (2) and 62 of the above-mentioned law.

KASUPDA also stated that it earlier had a meeting with the Union leadership and advised them to stop on-street-parking of vehicles in front of the Union and make available the planning building permit of the office and shopping complex.

The authority stated that it also met with the Union on the illegal development of shopping complex and agreed on what should be done, with timeline, but also failed to comply.

Accordingly, KASUPDA also stated that it has had meetings with Kaduna State Market Development Association, the developer of the shopping complex, and advised them on what to do but to no avail.

According to the notice, the property also has no digital certificate of occupancy, lacks adequate parking space and the building line compromised, leading to on-street-parking.

The authority, therefore, gave the Union 21 days from the date of receiving the notice to vacate the entire complex and remove all valuables for demolition.

But, the Union secretary, Comrade John Femi Adi, assured that, based on advise, the agent of the shopping complex is currently given every necessary attention deserved to comply with the KASUPDA’s directive so as to avoid the demolition.
