Group gives Zamfara Governor 2 weeks’ ultimatum to end insurgency

by Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Zamfara State governor, Bello Muhammad Mutawalle, has been given 2 weeks’ ultimatum to end insurgency, killings, kidnapping and abduction of innocent people by terrorists in the state.

He is also expected to come out and explain the reasons for continued negotiation with bandits even when the negotiation is not working in the state.

The ultimatum was handed down by group under the guise of ‘Concerned All Progressives Congress (APC) Youth of Nigeria,’ during a press briefing held in Kaduna Tuesday.

The national coordinator of the APC group, Dr. Suleiman Shuaibu Shinkafi, who briefed journalists, warned that the governor would be dragged to ECOWAS’ court after two weeks, if he failed to comply with their directive.

“The reason for this ultimatum for the governor is because the issue of security is too much in Zamfara State. The killings, kidnappings and abductions are still so much in the state.

“Our people are suffering. We don’t know why the governor insisted in negotiating with Zamfara State even when the approach is not working. Even Americans – the super powers – don’t negotiate with terrorists, and so why the governor should continue to negotiate?,” he said.

“These are some of the issues we discussed and that of his defection, and a resolution was reached. The state has only 14 LGs and, therefore, we see no reason why he’s insisting in negotiation.” Even when the process is continued, according to them, people are being killed on daily basis.

“Therefore, if he did not come out to tell his reasons for continuing with the negotiation in two weeks, we’ll drag him to ECOWAS Court to seek redress,” he said.
