Plateau State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has appealed to the state government to set aside a hospital that would address cases of rape, saying, it’s a serious issue that has en-webbed communities.
The chapter’s NAWOJ chairman, Mrs Jennifer Yerima, made the appeal on Tuesday during a 3 days’ sensitization awareness of the dangers of rape, which was held at Rikos, in Jos North local government area.
Mrs Yerima explained that, the hospital should be free-of-charge. “This would help the community to come up with some of the molestation of women and children that is going on. Most of the parents have embarked on the culture of silence.”
She said, the rally was very significant to them because they want to key into the system of activism of gender-based violence, and the high level of reported rape cases and other forms of molestation in Nasarawa Gwong community.
According to her, “The sensitization is with the Nigeria Police, so that we can see how we can sensitize and raise awareness in communities that have the high cases of rape, particularly minors, women and widows.”
Mrs Yerima urged parents to report any case of child violation, abuse of women and widows to the Police or NAWOJ in the state.
She assured that they would support the women and children to ensure they get justice at the end of the day.
She observed that, when cases of rape are being reported, most parents don’t have the money to take their children to hospital for treatment.
Also speaking at the event, the DPO, Musa Hassan, of Nasarawa Gwong said the Commission has identified that rape has been on the increase in their communities, most especially in communities within Jos Nasarawa Gwong of Jos North local government area of the state.
He advised people within the community not to keep quiet whenever such cases are being reported, but should always report the matter to the Police Station.
He revealed that, they have discovered that some parents don’t report cases of rape and violations because of fear and treat.
Nevertheless, he assured the community that their responsibility is to make sure that they protect their children from being harmed. In addition, they should know that their responsibility is also to ensure that such cases are reported, to enable the Police take proper action(s) so that, those that commit the act should not go unpublished.
