Jos North LGC appraised for teaming-up with govt to sustain peace

by Christiana Gokyo, Jos

The Management Committee chairman of Jos North local government, Shehu Bala Usman, has acknowledged the role of the Vigilante Group, Neighborhood Watch, Professional Hunters Association as well as Elite Sheriff in complementing the efforts of the various federal government security operatives in the sustenance of peace and security of the citizens in the locality.

The chairman stated this during the continuation of the local government strategic community engagement meeting with the various stakeholders in his office in Jos North local government council secretariat in Jos on Monday.

According to him, his administration has enjoyed the support and cooperation of volunteer groups; hence the need for the local government to appreciate them for efficient service delivery.

The LGC chairman condemned the vandalism, looting and arson unleashed on some public and private organizations as well as individuals’ investments and utilities in the area by hoodlums, who ‘took over’ even after the imposition of curfew in Jos North and Jos South local government areas of Plateau state.

He noted that a protest, widely acclaimed as peaceful and purpose-drive was allowed to be hijacked by some people with other motives, who resorted to destructive tendencies.

While calling on the Vigilante Group, the Neighborhood Watch and Elites Sheriff Corps as well as the Professional Hunters Association of Nigeria to defend the local government by providing information to security agencies on the activities of hoodlums in the area and to also engage the youths to disengage themselves from the negative tendencies, which he said are counterproductive, he assured the groups of the local government’s total support towards achieving that cause.

In separately responding, the Commander of Vigilante Group, Mohammed Bagobiri, those of Neighborhood Watch, Sani Kachalla, the Elite Sheriff Corps and Professional Hunters Association of Nigeria counterpart, Patience Sunday and Yohanna Awuna, respectively, appreciated the management committee chairman of the local government for proactiveness in the area of support and encouragement, which according to them, further strengthened them, and assured the chairman of the readiness of the volunteer groups to support his administration and that of Governor Lalong.
