Nigerian Rail Workers Decry Nonpayment Of Salaries – Investigation

by Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Nigeria Railway Corporation, Abuja-Kaduna railway transport services workers have decried nonpayment of salaries for over four months.

Staffs sources, who spoke to our correspondent in confidence, said they have not been hearing from the contractor for over four months on the reasons for the delay.

Findings revealed that the female contractor and banker (working in Lagos) did not show up or communicated to the pathetic-looking staffs, for over four months on salary issues.

“We have our families and we pay transport and feeding, but nobody is telling us anything about our salaries, and we’re afraid of speaking out, for fear of being singled out and sacked,” they said.

Investigation also revealed that the lady in-charge of contract staff (name withheld) and favourite of Minister of Transport, Mr Chubeike Amechi’s, is working in Lagos and always unavailable.

“She is yet to tell us whether the railway is no more paying the contracting staff salaries since April, even though we’re doing our work as cleaners and other things in the train stations in Abuja and Kaduna,” the staffs lamented.

The contract workers said they are being paid N20,000 only on monthly basis as salaries, but surprised that government could not afford the money anymore.

Contacted on 09054427699, the Nigerian Railway official in Abuja office, whose name was not clearly spelt out, insisted that our reporter must come to their office in person, saying he has no authority to talk to the media. He however could not assist journalists with a number of any authorities to speak to as demanded and pleaded.
