Election Results: Peace Network warns against Fake News Merchants

…Points accusing fingers especially at the Social Media.

Following their activities, Network of Peace Journalists on the Community Initiatives to Promote Peace (CIPP) program, with coordination from Interfaith Mediation Centre (IMC), Kaduna, Nigeria, has warned on the consequences of quacks and bloggers against fake news on social media platforms.

The network stated that, as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was announcing the results of the elections, CIPP program with coordination from IMC, Kaduna, Nigeria, has warned against the spread of fake news on the social media amidst the 2023 result announcement.

They stressed that citizens need to be cautious against such news on facebook, twitters, instagram, and WhatsApp, among many others.

In a statement made available by team leader of the group, Ibrahima Yakubu, it called on all patriotic citizens to be informed on news from credible media organizations.

According to him, “During electioneering season like this, fake news users usually dominate the social media platforms and, hence, the need to sensitize the general public on dangers associated with fake news amidst INEC declaration of results on the elections conducted. 

He equally raised an alarm of unprofessional and quacks’ spread of fake news on the social media platforms.

He further commended patriotic Nigerians for conducting themselves in a peaceful manner during the presidential and National Assembly elections in the country. 

They as well thanked all media organizations across the country for their marvelous contributions towards promoting peace journalism for the promotion of peace and unity among Nigerians.

He commended Nigerian Union of Journalists for opening-up a Situation Room during and after the elections 

While stressing that the National Secretariat has set up a Situation Room with hotlines for journalists, who come under attack during and after the 2023 elections.

He added that the effort is geared towards ensuring that journalists received necessary support, guidance about their rights and available safety mechanisms, as well as litigation assistance, should that become necessary to enforce their rights.

They also appreciated the effort of security personnel and youth organizations for greatly investing and in the promotion of peace and stability in the country.
