Police Commissioner to pay compensation for Sealing-off LGC Chairman’s Office

by Christiana Gokyo, Jos

PLATEAU STATE – The Plateau State Commissioner of Police has been ordered to pay compensation for sealing-off the office of Executive Chairman of Langtang  North Local Government Council, Hon. Dr Joshua Ubandoma Laven, in the light of the fact that, the CP is saddled with the duty to enforce rule of law.

The Order came from S.P. Gang, from the Plateau State High Court sitting in Jos on Monday, to pay compassion of N500,000.00 or risk jail for failure to enforce judgment creditor/Plaintiff, Hon. Joshua Ubandoma Laven, for truncating his tenure of office.

It could be recalled that, sometimes in June 2022, Dr Joshua Ubandoma Laven had approached the court seeking for Interpretation of Judgment obtained as the elected Chairman of Lantang North LGA and tenure that expired 10th Oct, 2022.

He filed a suit through his Counsel, Barr. Niri Darong, challenging his illegal removal as the Chairman of Lantang North, and judgment was entered in his favour and the Commissioner of Police, CP Bartholomew Onyeka, ordered that, “for insecurity reasons, the office should remain under-lock-and key.”

Our correspondent reports that, Barr. Zulfa Rimven, who was the APC Candidate, was brought to occupy the office to run the affairs of the council without him being an elected Chairman of Lantang North Local Government Area. Based on the judgment, he was an imposter.

During her judgment, the Judge noted that, “By Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Commissioner of Police acted contrary for breaching the law of enforcement handed to him by our laws.”

The Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government Council of Plateau State, Hon. Joshua Ubandoma Laven, approached the court to allow him complete his tenure of office as Chairman of Lantang North Local Government Area, which was truncated by Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission that organized fresh election in the Local Government when his tenure was still running.

The Judge then ordered that, the Claimant/Creditor be allowed into office any moment from now, saying, “Any attempt to refuse the order given by the court risks to disobedient to court order, and tantamount to jail.”
