Former Chairman of Bassa Local Government Area, Hon. Chindo Gona, who is also one of aspirants of Jos North/Bassa Federal Constituency bye-election, following the demise of Hon. Maitala, has said, if given the opportunity to be at the Green Chamber, his attention and focus will be on peace and security of his Constituency.
Hon. Chindo Gona, who is one out of the seven contestants from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party, said as an aspirant coming from the grassroots, he is familiar with the terrain and peculiarities within Jos North/Bassa Constituency.
Speaking with journalists in his residence in Jos recently, Hon Gona disclosed that, what motivates him to aspire or contest for this position is because he is interested in the in Jos North/Bassa to have peace, adding that, “On my own, it’s just to embark on peace because I want to restore peace in Bassa and Jos North Constituency; that is my concern.
“When I get there, I will make sure I collaborate with whoever that is in the Stool of Government on the Plateau State and will put ourselves together, myself and the Governor, to ensure that peace reigns in Bassa and Jos North Local Government Areas, and that is my main concern for now.”
Hon. Chindo Gona added that, “Because when there is peace, you can go about doing your business. It is with peace that your children can go to school; it is with peace that you can visit your brothers and sisters or well-wishers, and without peace you can’t do nothing. So, peace is paramount, and that is what I am after, that is my primary assignment when I get there.”
Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had earlier declared February 26th, 2022, for the Jos North /Bassa Federal Constituency bye-election in Plateau State.
Reacting on the rumour making rounds that the ‘Governor Lalong has a special candidate,’ Hon. Gona said he is not aware of anything like that, but there has been rumour that a serving Commissioner for Commerce and Industry in the state, Joseph Abby Aku, who is also contesting, is the anointing candidate of the Governor.
The immediate past Chairman of Bassa Local Government Council, stated that, “Any aspirant, who is parading himself that Governor Lalong sent him – that person is lying and at the same time deceiving himself.”
He stressed that, “Even those, who are saying that the governor is coming with a candidate, I don’t believe that. Governor Simon Lalong has not assigned anybody or supported anybody to come out and contest this election. So, whoever is saying that is deceiving himself. I know, that day the delegates for this election God is going to use them.”
According to him, ‘If the Governor has anything to say, probably he will call all of us and say, ‘Please, I want this or that; or I want consensus and this is the person all of us are going to support,’ and we will submit to that.”
Hon. Gona noted thus: “But for now, nothing has been said by the governor, and somebody is going round talking about him, which he has not said anything. The governor had not talked or said anything to us about the aspirant of his choice.”
