The All Progressives Congress (APC) party in Plateau has elected 36 new EXCOs to run the affairs of the party in the state, with the emergence of Rufus Bature, former Secretary to the Government of the State, as the Chairman.
The APC Congress, which took place over the weekend in Jos, was conducted by Hon. Eric Eweibane as chairman of APC Congress Committee in the state.
The chairmanship position had six (6) aspirants, who declared interest for the position. Two former speakers of the State House of Assembly, Isa Song, Yohanna Madaki and Commissioner for Lands and Surveys, respectively, were among other contestants.
Our correspondent reports that, the party had earlier zoned the Chairmanship position to Northern zone. After due consultations and deliberations, however, other aspirants stepped down and ceded the chairmanship to Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, which gave Rufus Bature an edge.
All delegates, who came from the 17 LGAs of the state, agreed on the consensus, after Hon. Eric Ewebane, chairman APC Congress Committee Plateau State, said, there were two guidelines in which the party conducts its Delegates Congress, which includes: consensus and elections proper.
He said, the leadership of the party has painstakingly zoned various positions across the three senatorial districts of the state fairly.
Speaking at the event, Governor Simon Lalong expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the State Congress, which was through consensus, and shows how committed the members are in galvanizing all differences and working together for the common interest of the party.
According to him, such unity of purpose has been responsible for the continuous acceptance of the party and its consolidation in the State, which accounted for the recent overwhelming victory of the APC in the recent Local Government elections and enabled the party to win in all the 17 Local Government areas.
He charged the newly elected EXCO to work in synergy with other party officials at the Local Government, Ward and Unit levels, and emphasized the need for them to carry along all members and be fair, honest and transparent in all their dealings.
Also speaking, the Deputy Speaker House of Representatives, Idris Wase, and other APC political leaders described the State Congress as yet another record breaker in the successes achieved by the party in the State.
They noted that, the success of the state congress has clearly shown that the APC remains the biggest party in the State and across the nation with clear capacity for more victories in forthcoming elections.
They also called on members to come together and embrace reconciliation and patience in supporting the elected party officials to deliver on their mandate.
In his acceptance speech on behalf of the newly elected 36 Exco, the Chairman-elect, Hon. Rufus Bature, expressed appreciation to the members and leaders of the party for electing them.
Hon. Bature stressed that, the fact that their election was done through consensus without any challenges means that the party has fully evolved and is taking major strides in good governance, inclusivity and fairness to the citizens.
The new chairman appreciated the governor for giving the state the needed leadership that has endeared APC to the people and continued to give them hope.
He assured that, the party exco will support him and also carry along all members at all times and also avail them level playing field for aspiring to any position.
