The Need for Unity of Middle-Belt

By our Correspondent.

Perspective.

If we view from the longitude and latitude perspective of height, width, depth and distance, etc., the physical, cultural and geographical features of the Middle-Belt gives an inquirer the right impression of the region’s relative position with distinction.

To the extreme West, the Middle-Belt ethnic nationalities of Kwara State and Borgu in Niger State share borders with Benin Republic, while to the East, the ethnic nationalities of Burra, in Southern Borno, and in Yobe share borders with Cameroon Republic.

The people of the Middle-Belt went through Missionary Schools of both Christian and Islamic faiths. The educational institutions are almost equally spread and the people can be said to be evenly educated. Religious peace and harmony were achieved in the Middle-Belt as the three major religions – Traditional, Christianity and Islam – are entrenched in the region.

Siblings belong to different religious faiths and yet, remain united in love by biological links and socio-cultural interactions. Consultations among the leadership of various groups should continue. It is necessary to do so, in order to attract Middle-Belt men and women, youths, for various national issues that will continue to present themselves for resolution.

It is with language that culture is communicated and, therefore, a community with different tongues will find it hard to express or exchange ideas even if their cultures are similar. A common language is lacking, which is, therefore, a natural defect in the Middle-Belt Region. All the same, we must embrace unity within the region to enhance these. Mutual interests, goals, methods and shared values are present, especially where they are easily communicated and understood by the different parties. There are over two hundred ethnic nationalities and tongues within the Middle-Belt Region.

The system of the previous Indirect-Rule of the colonial government was such that the Middle-Belt Region was subordinated to the Islamic system. Propaganda machinery of the defunct Northern Region government were deployed to effect the policy and entrench the system so much so that the average Middle-Belter was conditioned to a state of mental stupor, mingled with fear.

It is sad that the situations, as explained, are still some of the factors, which made the Middle-Belter so docile and unable to assist each other – even when in position to do so. It is a similar scenario that is playing out today. We believe in this house that, the feudal system inherited from the defunct North has been permeated through the political system of the Middle-Belt States which rendered the governments irresponsible for their conducts.

The change, which seems realistic and possible at the moment, is better effected by youth of the Middle-Belt outside of government and through socio-political and Non-Governmental Organizations; political pressure groups, cultural associations, professional groups of men and women, target groups that are better placed to initiate the required changes.

The States creation exercise of 1976, 1987, 1991 and 1996 were done in such a manner as to dismember and make more hopeless the status of ethnic nationalities of the Middle-Belt groups.

THE DISMEMBERMENT OF THE MIDDLE-BELT REGION THROUGH SATANIC STATE CREATION EXERCISE AND BOUNDARY ADJUSTMENTS BY THE VARIOUS HAUSA/FULANI MILITARY REGIMES WERE DELIBERATE, IN ORDER TO FURTHER PUT THE PEOPLE APART AND MAKE THEIR UNITY DIFFICULT. IT WAS ALSO THE SECRET PLAN OF THE DEFUNCT NORTHERN NIGERIA TO BALKANIZE THE MIDDLE-BELT REGION, WHICH IS DOMINATED BY CHRISTIAN MAJORITY.

AS ALREADY MENTIONED, IN STATES CREATION EXERCISE, ETHNIC NATIONALITIES OF THE MIDDLE-BELT WERE DISMEMBERED AND MERGED WITH DIFFERENT STATES WHERE THE HAUSA/FULANIS, OR KANURIS, WERE PREDOMINANT, E.G., BAUCHI, KEBBI, BORNO/YOBE STATES AND SOUTHERN KADUNA. WHEN THAT WAS NOT FEASIBLE, THEY ENSURED THAT THE STATE CAPITAL IS AT AN EMIRATE TOWN, E.G., LAFIA, IN NASARAWA STATE. THAT WAS THE FORERUNNER OF THE CURRENT EVIL GEO-POLITICAL ZONES OF TODAY. THE MIDDLE-BELTERS, WHO WERE REPRESENTED BY THEIR DELEGATES AT THE 2014 NATIONAL CONFERENCE, SPOKE WITH ONE VOICE AND CALLED FOR, AND ARE STILL CALLING FOR THE FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE REPORT OF THE CONFERENCE. AT THE MOMENT, THE MIDDLE-BELTERS ARE ASKING FOR THE MEETING OF THE ETHNIC NATIONALITIES OF THE COUNTRY TO FASHION OUT A NEW CONSTITUTION, AS THE 1999 CONSTITUTION IS A FRAUD.
