…Expresses fear of roadblocks.
by Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna
National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Kaduna State, has expressed disappointment with government over the demolition of motor parks in various parts of the state without provisions for alternatives, saying it may lead to serious roadblocks.
Our correspondent reliably learnt that NURTW had taken the matter far and high, in many quarters, complaining that government was unfair to the Union as far as the issue of demolition of parks in Kaduna state is concerned.
Contacted in his office, chairman Kaduna Council of the union, Alh Aliyu Tenimu, who confirmed the allegations, said the quit notices given them over the demolition of the motor parks were so short.
The chairman lamented that all efforts made by the union to meet the government officials on the quit notices before the demolition of the parks was unsuccessful.
In addition, the chairman, who spoke through the Union Secretary, Comrade Bature Suleiman, expressed dismay that government could not even provide members an alternative place before it commenced demolition.
He explained that even though, they were aware and in support of the ongoing urban renewal development, demolition of three motor parks without alternative place could lead to roadside loading of passengers and is capable of causing roadblocks.
According to him, members of the union are already counting their losses due to the demolition of Television Garage/Kakuri, Tudun Wada/Kssuan Barchi and Kantin Kweri (Gate) without providing any alternative place.
“This is in addition to the carry-over of the first and second wave of COVID-19 lockdown incidents, which members of the union went through before the demolition.
“The KSTA premises given to us as alternative in Television is not habitable. No water, no light and no passenger will like to go there. The one of T/Wada/K/Barchi, we’ve the big Lorries parking there that take goods from Central Market to other locations in town, and displacing them from there could lead to parking on the road and causing hold-ups is our fear.
“The one of K/Kweri is the only Bus Town Service Terminus we have in Kaduna Town, like in every other city. If they block such park, buses could cause go-slow on Ahmadu Bello Way.
“So, that’s why we are appealing that our own service is a necessity to the people. That’s why we said anytime government wants to construct such parks, they should find us alternative location.”
