High Court ruling will limit bureaucracy in FCT judges’ appointments – Group

by Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Group, under the auspices of ‘Coalition for Justice and Democracy,’ has described the court ruling by Justice Inyang Ekwo on the appointment of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, judges as “historic, courageous and unprecedented.”

A statement, issued and made available to journalists in Kaduna on Thursday by the coalition, indicated that the ruling affirmed the powers of the National Judicial Council and limits the political bureaucracy.

The statement, signed by the coalition’s president and secretary, Mallam Bashir Abubakar and Abdulkarim Baffa, respectively, noted that the ruling has limited the political bureaucratic process of dragging judicial appointments to the legislature, describing it as cumbersome.

“Justice Iyang Ekwo’s ruling is historic, courageous and unprecedented. The ruling has highlighted and affirmed the powers of the National Judicial Council and limits the political bureaucracy and cumbersome process of dragging judicial appointments to the legislature.

“Any effort aimed at affirming and asserting the independence of the judiciary will strengthen our democracy and secure the temple of justice from undue interference, blackmail and meddling,” the statement added.
