A District Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Zaria, Malam Mustapha Yauri, was on Wednesday, 11th August, 2020, arrested and detained by the Police in Zaria, while carrying out his official duty.
Malam Yauri was arrested by the police, while snapping a picture of a trailer vehicle that blocked the Samaru-Kwangila fly-over Road in a protest to rift between the KASTLEA and trailer drivers.
The NAN correspondent, while narrating his ordeal to newsmen, said he had conducted interviews with some eyewitnesses on the crisis between KASTLEA and drivers, and he proceeded to the main scene where the trailer blocked the road, in order to snap pictures, and a police officer in mufti attempted to seize the phone where he declined.
According to him, after he declined, he went further to show the officer his identity card and the police officer immediately seized the ID card and called some armed police men and told them to take him to the police station and detain him and bring his phone back to him (the police officer).
He said the three armed police officers acted swiftly where they jerked his trousers and pushed him into their truck.
Mustapha Yauri added that, while on their way to the station in the police Hilux truck, the armed police men forcefully collected his mobile phone and dropped him at Sabon Gari Divisional Police Office.
He said he was detained at the Police Station for many hours before the DPO, Mr Abdullahi Ibrahim, called him into his office, apologized to him and, subsequently, released him from detention and his mobile phone and staff identity card earlier seized was also returned to him.
