IPC condemns attack, brutal killing of veteran journalist in Nasarawa NUJ

The International Press Centre (IPC) has condemned the attack and brutal killing of former treasurer of Nigerian Union of Journalists in Nasarawa State Council, Benjamin Ekom.

Mr Ekom was reportedly killed by unknown gunmen at his residence in Washo Village, in Eggon local government area of Nasarawa state on Monday, 3rd August, 2020.

Before his death, Mr Ekom served as Information Officer with Akun Local Government of Nasarawa State and also worked as Secretary-General of Eggon Cultural and Development Association (ECDA).

A statement signed by Program Officer/Safety Desk Officer of IPC, Mr. Melody Akinjiyan, said IPC Director, Mr. Lanre Arogundade, described the attack as unfortunate, barbaric and uncalled for.

“We urge security agencies to carry out immediate investigations and ensure
the culprits face the law. This will go a long way to bring succor to the family and friends Benjamin Ekom left behind,” the statement added.

It further called on security operatives to make more efforts to ensure people are safe to go about their legitimate activities.

IPC in the statement condoled with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.
