Following the increasing cases of rape in Nigeria, a House of Assembly member, representing Sanga Constituency in Kaduna State House of Assembly, Mrs Comfort Amwe, has suggested death penalty or removal of manhood for offenders, saying doing so would be the only solution to curtail the heinous act on innocent children.
The female lawmaker, who stated this in an interview with journalists in Kaduna, said that, only capital punishment would send a strong signal to other potential culprits, sighting example of 6 months’ old, who was rapped to death in Kaduna.
She observed that some of the desk officers in the Police Station, who are saddled with the responsibility of handling rape cases, have mostly compromised, thereby subjecting the victims to unnecessary hardship by supporting the culprits.
“For an offender, who inflicted severe pains and trauma on a minor, including her parents, would be asked to bring money or food for the offender – it’s unacceptable to any sane conscience.
“It is so disheartening to see that even minors are not spared,” Amwe exclaimed, while lamenting on an incident whereby a six months’ old baby was raped to death in Kaduna recently.
