The demolition to rubble of Kaduna popular beer joint by Governor Nasir El-Rufai-led administration has been observed as a “clear case of witch-hunting and politically motivated.”
The allegation was made by Barrister C.J. Nwogu, the legal adviser to Mr Emeka Ugwua, who owns the (demolished) property, located opposite Command Secondary School, Kaduna. Nwogu said they’re still weighing the options to take.
Barr. Nwogu, of Basil C. Nwogu & Co., told our correspondent in a phone interview that the beer joint, known as ‘GM Car Park and Relaxation Centre,’ has been paying its tax and ground rent since 2014 when it was established.
He also stated that the location of the center was far away from road and met the required meters in terms of proximity from the roads.
Barr. Nwogu said they’ve earlier received about three quit notices from the state Urban Development Agency, KASUPDA, warning those doing business alongside roads to vacate, but were replied, requesting the agency to come and check.
According to him, the last letter of 7days’ quit notice from Sabon Tasha KASUPDA unit was also replied, as the agency promised to get back to them soon, only to have heard on Friday that the centre has been demolished, and everything inside the centre destroyed.
He lamented that, while they acknowledged that government is the custodian of all landed property, they’re still considering the options to take, saying, “even though it’s difficult to fight authority, government must follow the rule of law and not be lawless.”
Contacted, the El-Rufai’s media aides, Ibrahim Musa and Muyiwa Adekeye, could not respond. However, KASUPDA PRO, one Mallam Nuhu, later confirmed the information, and argued that “government reserved the right to revoke land permit of any temporary structure of business premises, especially under the ongoing urban renewal development.”
Findings revealed that the demolished relaxation centre (beer joint) is flapped left and right and, therefore, located in the midst of Peace Mass Transit Transport Company and a Restaurant, which were not affected by the demolition.
Recalled that the security man manning the beer parlour revealed that Governor El-Rufai drove through the area 30 days before four Hilux vehicles loaded with security operatives arrived the scene and demolished it on Friday.
