Kaduna elections marred by massive irregularities – Senator Sani

…Calls for cancellation

by Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

Senator representing Kaduna Central, Senator Shehu Sani, has raised alarm over election malpractices that characterized the just-concluded presidential and National Assembly elections in the state.

Addressing world press in Kaduna on Monday, Sani said the elections in Kaduna were marred by massive irregularities and rigging by INEC staffs and officials of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, government, calling for outright cancelation of the elections.

Sani, who joined his party, PRP, in calling for the cancelation of the election, especially National Assembly elections, said the Kaduna election results was full of falsehood and lack credibility, stressing that the expectation of people for free, fair and credible elections by INEC was dashed.

“Expectation of a better, higher election than that of 2015, by Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, was dashed. I was particularly disturbed by the way election went in Kaduna. We have all our agents and supporters on ground, who witnessed the election. INEC needs to be on ground to witness and monitor the conduct of its members and government officers and ensure they did not mar the elections. That was not done,” he lamented.

While he commended the security agents for preventing electorate and supporters from causing crises during the exercise in the entire state, he expressed regrets that Card Readers malfunction in many local governments were experienced.

He also lamented that there was “Evidences over voting in many polling stations, intimidation of people, especially oppositions, lack of serious scrutiny to know voters by their voters’ cards, and others.”

Senator Sani revealed that the trained INEC officials were replaced with government staff by local government chairmen by putting the ruling party’s people as ‘INEC’ officials.

In Igabi LG, he said figures were rewritten, and 90 percent of the votes of the ruling party came through vote-buying. “I call for cancelation of election in Kaduna state, especially National Assembly elections. Complains of missing ballot papers were overwhelming in Southern Kaduna.

“If serious actions are not taken toward correcting the errors, we will not take the result or outcome of the elections. There were serious connivance between the ruling party and INEC officials. I therefore join my party in calling for outright cancelation of the election.
