As a presidential election collation was going on at INEC Headquarters Jos, Maiyango Junction, a sudden outbreak of fire at a filling station near the Independent National Electoral Commission’s Jos Headquarters today caused heavy logjam in the Plateau state capital.
The fire, at the Bok Investment Filling station, started with a loud explosion at about 4:30pm, local time.
Series of other minor explosions followed as the flames flew high into the sky, accompanied by thick dark smoke.
The Presidential Collation Centre situated within the INEC Headquarters had just gone on a recess to compile the final election results as received from the 17 LGAs in the state when the disaster occurred.
Our correspondent reports that no life was lost, as the filling station was said to be closed when the incident happened. A private vehicle parked within the filling station was safely evacuated with the help of some youths, while the fire was still raging.
A fuel tanker was, however, flaming along with other facilities in the filling station as of the time of this report.
The disaster is believed to have occurred when the now razed tanker was offloading fuel. No official comment has been obtained on the actual cause of the incident.
